Event Details

Following feedback from our network, we know more and more institutions want to learn and to improve their support for learners from an asylum seeking background. This webinar will be useful for anyone supporting a young person seeking asylum with their education. We will be joined by colleagues from REUK and The University of Salford to share their expertise in this area.

Refugee Education UK (REUK) equips young refugees (including those still seeking asylum) to build hopeful futures by thriving in education. They do this through educational services, such as mentoring, advice and guidance, workshops and casework, and capacity-building training and research which embed change and amplify good practice.

This webinar will cover the following topics, recognising the often complex intersection between the care system and the asylum system:

- Defining key immigration terms
- Identifying barriers to education across all levels
- Analysing factors that affect eligibility at further education (FE)
- Exploring how to overcome barriers to accessing university (HE)

Guest Speakers

  • Sylvester Rukani, University of Salford. Sylvester will share an overview of the challenges faced by Unaccompanied Asylum-Seeking Young people in transition to adulthood from residential care setting and semi-independent living, "A brief touch on findings in relation to my research study".
  • Arron Pile, University of Salford. Arron works at Salford University where he manages the team supporting both care experienced students and asylum seekers. Arron is also the Co-Chair of NNECL. Arron's presentation will focus on supporting UASC from a university perspective, and will include practical information on their student journey from pre-registration advice and guidance to graduation
