Event Details

We know people with care experience are underrepresented in higher education. Even with the statutory requirement to improve educational outcomes for young people in care, too few care leavers get to enjoy the lifelong advantages a university education can provide.

Of the approx.10,000 young people leaving care each year 14% of care leavers enter higher education by the age of 19, compared to 47% of the general population. The reasons for this are complex and multi-layered and yet for people with care experience going to university is proven to level up career success;

  • By age 27, just 22% of care leavers are in employment compared to 57% of non-care leavers. For university graduates, 71% of care leavers are in full-time employment compared to 77% of non-care experienced graduates.
  • Care leavers who graduate from university earn, on average just £660 less than non-care leavers, 18 months after graduation

At NNECL we believe all young people should be empowered and supported to achieve their full educational potential.

In this webinar, we'll introduce our work with education practitioners and care system professionals to transform the progression of children in care and care leavers, into and through further education, higher education and degree apprenticeships so they can go on into fulfilling careers, which will sustain them for life. We will share the benefits of NNECL membership and discuss how the national network collaborates for care leaver success, which can support you in your role. There will also be time for questions throughout the session.
